Ragini MMS - Scary..Really ?

'Ragini MMS' is a paranormal film with a hint of suspense, shot as if in real time!. Those who have seen 'Paranormal Activity would understand how this works :) The quintessential couple, Ragini and Uday, set out to have a dirty weekend at a friend's farmhouse on the outskirts of Mumbai. The weekend getaway quickly changes gears as they find themselves in a house that has been rigged with cameras.

The story begins with jump cuts of a young couple filming each other with a handycam, the idea is to get intimate. The boy, Uday (Raj Kumar Yadav) has another secret plan, while the girl, Ragini (Kainaz Motivala) is truly committed and ignorant of her boyfriend's true motives. Their love-nest happens to be an oddly-shaped bungalow in the middle of the forest imaginable. What you can also imagine is what would follow. But the terror, although impending, doesn't prepare you enough to take it head-on. In fact, there would be scenes where you would want to tuck your head between your knees, with your fingers screwed tightly inside your ears.

While the 'presence' is established with subtlety, grunting, moaning and heavy breathing follow. And although this is the point when Indian horror films lose their sheen, this one manages to hold on for much longer with scenes panning out slowly to tweak the right amount of fear. Will they be doomed for good or is there hope? Honestly, you would care more about making it out of this movie with a sound heart yourself.

For a film with no celebrated names in the cast or crew, this film had to really hit it out of the park to make a mark. Luckily, it has managed a fairly decent job in the spook department and the handycam effect, although initially annoying, is later cleverly used to amplify this bone-chilling experience. Raj is perfectly unrefined and despicable as his character demands and Kainaz's screams will reverberate in your ears long after you're out of the movie screen.

The lack of a credible back story or subplots ensures that you don't empathize with your butchered couple. Raj Kumar who almost essays the same videotaping voyeur's role he played in LSD, is underutilized and though a feeble attempt is made at the end to make you empathize with him, it's too late. The concept of horror in the film is of western origin - that of pure evil. The Japanese version of horror, which is gaining currency in Hollywood after dozens of their horror films have been remade, is that of empathy for the ghost as well where the film also become a mystery, besides being a dumb slasher movie.

Ekta Kapoor says 'We are inspired by the medium of 'Paranormal Activity'. The technique, the way the film was done. They were the grab footage (shot by multiple cameras from various angles), the real grab-footage. 'Paranormal Activity 1' apparently had all grab footage. 'Paranormal Activity 2' has no real footage,'

This is the second film after Dibakar Banerjee's 'Love Sex Aur Dhoka' to be shot in real time in an unconventional way.
Asked what inspired her to make two films of almost same genre successively, Ekta said: 'I started my career with a paranormal show 'Mano ya Na Mano'. I have immense passion for paranormal activities. I always feel there is a bigger story behind every paranormal incident.'

Deepika 'The Real life Ragini' to Sue Against Ekta Kapoor

Deepika, whose real life story inspired Ekta Kapoor's upcoming film "Ragini MMS", Friday said that she would proceed legally against the producer if she does not show me the movie before the release. The 22 year old Delhi-based girl said that she already spoke to producer Ektha Kapoor in this connection but she's unable to find out why's Ekta not interested to show me the movie.

When Deepika dropped at Balaji office, the answers she's getting is that the movie was not ready and as such the production house is unable to show the movie, which is just one week away from release. Deepika was shown the movie's script before it has hit the production but Deepika wants to check whether she's been shown in the right light or not.

Says Deepika, “ I was shown the script during production and I absolutely have no problems with the script. However, there's ample variation between the content on paper and digital content. I want to check the digital content before there's any damage done to my image”. Although Deepika was offered compensation for her story, producer Ekta maintains that only 30 percent of the film is based on the rest is completely imaginative.

Ragini MMS is a true story of Deepika, where her boyfriend secretly filmed both of them involved in intimate physical contact. Ragini MMS movie is produced by Ekta and directed by Pawan Kripalani, and Kainaz Motivala is essaying Deepika's role.
